How much does a Wedding Photographer Cost?

How much a wedding photographer will cost for your special day will mainly be determined but 3 factors. What service you think you want, how popular or in demand a particular photographer is and what area you are getting married in. This article will help you understand each states average and some insight on how photography prices are set by photographers.

How much is a wedding photographer?

As mentioned above there are a few factors that need to be accounted for when starting to set a price. Here are the most common ones,

  • Experience level: Is the photographer new to the industry but they are great with a camera, are they new to photography all together or are they a true wedding professional with a lot of experience, consistent leads and weddings booked 2 years in advance.

  • Lifestyle: Some photographers live frugal and some photographers will live lavishly. As their are a limited amount of Saturdays and that weddings are typically seasonal. Some photographers will simply look at their lifestyle cost, over heads and savings goals and divide it by the amount of weddings they think they can realistically can book. This is a horrible method when they fall short and don’t book the amount of couples they were predicting.

  • Location, Location, Location!: This could mean the area you are getting married in or even if you are asking someone to travel a great distance because you wouldn’t have anyone other than them taking photos are your wedding. According to Easy Weddings These are the average spend on wedding photographers as per their couples.

    WESTERN AUSTRALIA - $2982
    NORTHERN TERRITORY - $2047
    NEW SOUTH WALES - $3663
    QUEENSLAND - $2908
    SOUTH AUSTRALIA - $2758
    TASMANIA - $2597
    VICTORIA - $3287
    AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY - $2931

While these are a great guide i do believe their data is slight affected by a few factors. These averages do not take into account the amount of hours a photographer was hired for and that Easy Weddings are measuring couples that use their platforms and the truth is that a lot of photographers that typically charge more and are more popular just aren’t advertising on Easy Weddings as they get a solid amount of their leads and bookings through venue referrals and past couples. Theses prices also exclude extras such as prints and albums. I feel as a photographer that knows a lot of other photographers the average can range between $3500 and $5000. I can bet if you are looking at the more popular photographers your quotes will be more towards the $5000 mark for a full day and some will include prints and photo albums and come won’t.

How To Pick a Photographer For Your Wedding

I know you are looking at a page that is discussing pricing, but pricing is no way to pick a photographer and if you bare with me i can give you some insight on how to pick a photographer that will meet your needs first and the budget part can be worked out after.

  1. Look at photographers work in your local area: This means doing research, grab some wine and get to a computer. Your phone just isn’t going to cut it on this one. We need space and multiple tabs open. Great sources will include your venues recommended suppliers list, instagram tags that are local, google and facebook wedding groups!

  2. Websites, reviews and an active ABN: Once you have found the style you like from a few different photographers you can head to their websites and look for some pricing, reviews and head to the ABN lookup site to make sure they are registered!. Most photographers will hide prices from their websites so that you need to contact them to get it. Be aware that some photographers literally have different pricing lists for the same services. I do not recommend reaching out with a business email address.

  3. Pricing: Now that you have selected a handful of people and you have contacted them for pricing i would be arranging a zoom call or a meeting with the short list that is within your budget
